Awareness and Education

EXTENDING OUR REACH: NEW MEMBERS
·········
ACAM reaches out to other community assistance
ministries, including organizations working in underserved areas, in order to
further strengthen the social service safety net in the Greater Houston area and
to increase racial, ethnic and geographic diversity among our membership.
In 2008, ACAM added five new members to the
existing seven for an increase of 71%. New members include: Catholic Charities
of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, Epiphany Community Health Outreach
Services (ECHOS), My Brother’s Keeper Outreach Center, St. Vincent’s House and
Wesley Community Center.

·········
IMPACTING THE BIG PICTURE:
AWARENESS AND ADVOCACY
·········
ACAM works to raise awareness around the issues
affecting the client population served by the ministries with the hope of
rallying support for initiatives and funding that will provide pathways out of
poverty for individuals and families in Greater Houston. ACAM is also working to
ensure that all areas of our community have access to community assistance
ministries.
ACAM interfaces directly with local policy-making
groups regarding the needs of the ministries and their clients and is also a
member of One Voice, an advocacy collaborative for health and human services at
the state level. Recently, due to advocacy of which ACAM was a part, METRO
agreed to reinstate the nonprofit rate for bus tokens, greatly reducing the
burden on our members.
