ACAM's Annual Meeting was a resounding success!

Every year, ACAM hosts an Annual Meeting for funders and ministries to connect and develop connections outside of the framework of the ask/give relationship. These networking opportunities provide a venue for leaders and staff of member organizations and funders to learn about topics of mutual interest, including best practices, and gain perspective about issues faced in each other’s work in the community.

ACAM Executive Directors gather for a group shot at the Annual Meeting on September 9 at the Houstonian.

Emma Ayoub's Pictures

Emma Ayoub’s birthday invitation featured a pretty princess and details for her upcoming celebration. But the five-year-old’s invitation also contained a very special request.

Princess Emma requests that in lieu of gifts please bring non-perishable food items.

Thinking this was a mistake, several friends and family reached out to Emma’s mother, Cristina Ayoub.

“’Aren’t you afraid that Emma is going to be upset when she doesn’t get any presents,’ was a very common question, but I told them that Emma knew what she wanted,” Cristina Ayuob said.

“I was nervous that once the party started and no one brought gifts Emma would be upset, but she wasn’t.”

Much to everyone’s surprise, Emma was filled with joy as she unwrapped gift bags full of canned food and other non-perishable items.

Like any good princess-in-training, Emma knew that people were in need. “Kids go hungry. Some kids have to eat old bread, but otherwise their belly would be empty.”

Emma came up with the donation birthday idea after her school, Briarmeadow Charter School, taught a lesson about sharing. Peter Heinze, Principal at Briarmeadow Charter School, noted that these lessons begin in the classroom.

“Through classroom lessons and rewarding students for ‘Unbridled Acts of Kindness’ the families at Briarwood believe in our motto: ‘Do nothing to diminish hope,’” said Heinze. “Our committed parents and community partners strongly believe in taking care of others.”

Working to find a local charity that would be in need of the over 100 pounds of food, Heinze and the Ayoub family turned to West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM). Established in 1982, WHAM supports individuals and families throughout West Houston through financial assistance, job search assistance, a food pantry and clothing from Second Blessing Store.

“Emma’s story is in inspiration,” said Beau Heyen, public relations coordinator for WHAM. “Having worked with children and youth, I am constantly amazed at the power of a young voice. Emma’s compassion for others is a gift.”

The Ayoub family hopes that they can inspire others to give. “It is as easy as writing a little note on an invitation. That’s it,” said Cristina Ayoub.
